In the space of a few days a film job can swing from one extreme to the other: a controlled greenscreen studio in Stockholm, every variable dialled in, and then the mountains around Åre, where the light does whatever it wants and the location is the whole point.
That range is the job. A crew that can shoot clean plates against green one week and read real mountain weather the next is a crew that can carry a story wherever it needs to go — and aerials have a place at both ends of that spectrum.
Two ways of working, one film
In the studio, everything is built. The greenscreen exists so the environment can be created or replaced in post, which means the discipline is precision — consistent lighting, clean edges, and camera moves that a VFX team can track and rebuild. Aerials feed this too: a plate flown on location becomes the background a studio foreground is composited into.
On location in Åre it flips. Now the environment is the star, and the work is about catching it — the fog sitting on the lake at dawn, the low autumn sun raking across the fells. You can't build that, you can only be ready for it, and a drone in the air lets you take the scale of the landscape and make it part of the frame.
Why the mountains reward aerial
Places like Åre and Copperhill are made for aerial cinematography: elevation, water, big weather and terrain that only resolves into a picture once you get above it. A rising drone move can take a viewer from an intimate detail to the full sweep of a valley in a single breath — the kind of establishing shot that anchors a whole sequence.
The trade-off is conditions. Cold, wind and fast-changing light in the mountains demand planning and a pilot who knows when to fly and when to wait. Get the timing right and the landscape does the storytelling for you.
